Why does our product carry a Proposition 65 warning?
Products sold in California are subject to the requirements of California Proposition 65 (Prop 65). This law requires businesses to provide a warning whenever a product may expose consumers to any of the chemicals listed by the State of California, including lead, even when those substances occur naturally and are present only in trace amounts.
As a result, Kinazi Cassava Flour sold in California carries the following notice:
WARNING: Consuming this product can expose you to chemicals including lead and lead compounds, which are known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information, visit www.P65Warnings.ca.gov/food
Why is lead present?
Lead is not added to our cassava flour at any stage of cultivation, processing, packaging, or distribution.
Cassava is a root crop that naturally absorbs water, nutrients, and minerals from the soil in which it grows. Rwanda’s soils are naturally rich in minerals, and like many agricultural soils around the world, they may contain naturally occurring trace amounts of lead. Because cassava develops underground, it can absorb these naturally occurring elements as part of its normal growth process.
Scientific assessments found that variations in lead levels are associated with the natural geological characteristics of different growing regions rather than industrial pollution or manufacturing practices.
Why is this warning required only in California?
California has one of the most stringent consumer warning laws in the US. Proposition 65 establishes a maximum allowable daily exposure level for lead of 0.5 micrograms per day, including exposure from naturally occurring sources found in foods.
Many agricultural products grown in soil including root crops, fruits, vegetables, herbs, and grains can naturally contain trace amounts of lead. California law requires a warning whenever exposure may exceed the threshold established by the state, regardless of whether the lead is naturally occurring or added.
